Introduction

Department of Land Resources and Environment Studies, formerly known as Physical Geography Office in the Department of Geography, can be traced to 1929 when Department of Geography was established in Sun Yat-sen University. It was the first time that geography was accepted as a natural science department in China. In 1952, Department of Geography provided the first batch of bachelor degrees in physical geography in China and started to train graduate students since 1961. In 2000, Physical Geography Office was empowered to award doctoral degrees. When the School of Geography and Planning was established in 2002, Physical Geography Office and Estuarine and Coastal Environment Research Institute combined and organized to the new Department of Land Resources and Environment Studies. In 2004, Land Research Centre was established. In 2009, Estuarine and Coastal Environment Research Institute was assigned to the newly established School of Marine Sciences.

Over the years, our department has provided with honor over one thousand of skilled workers in the field of physical geography research and practice, including 5 academicians in the Chinese Academy of Sciences.

Currently, we have ten full-time academic teaching staff (3 professors, 3 associate professors and 4 lecturers) and a comparable number of support and research staff. Their research interests cover a wide range of specializations in chemical geomorphology and global changes, use and protection of land resources, evaluation and prediction of geological disasters, and regional biological geography etc. Many faculty members' research endeavors have gained widespread recognition by academia, both nationally and internationally.
